In a recent commentary by Terence Heng on Channel News Asia, he zeroed in on some strange and disturbing trends in the wild world of pre-wedding shoots, where couples try to out-do each other in some weird ways, including a recently covered photoshoot in a cemetery in Malaysia.
This led us to question – is there a line, and have we crossed it? We all know how crazy wedding preparations can be, and some simply go over the top, demanding unique locations, wardrobes, make-up – no matter the cost. Of course photographers will try their best to meet this demands, but at some point should they as professionals just say no?
As Terence mentioned on his piece, there is a growing, and alarming obsession on pre-wedding shoots, which have now become inflated to a multi-million dollar industry in Asia. What started as simple studio set ups or picturesque sceneries are now productions that could rival some Hollywood sets – complete with props and legal waivers.

Destination weddings are now a big thing. Why go to your backyard, that’s just boring. Let’s pack it all up and head over to some exotic location to do the shoot. Mind you, exotic is subjective – anywhere out of the country would sometimes be considered exotic, but countries in Asia like Japan, Australia, Bali and even Taiwan have become choice places for grooms and brides to be to capture their pre-wedding moment. Some erstwhile couples have shipped their favourite photographer with them, because they can.
